The announcement comes as the Centre continues to focus on strengthening infrastructure and public services in the Union Territory.
Ladakh to Get High Court Bench, Not a Separate High Court
The Cabinet's decision does not create a separate High Court for Ladakh. Instead, the new facility will operate as a bench of the existing High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Judges of the High Court can be assigned to sit at the Ladakh bench and hear matters that fall within its designated jurisdiction. This will provide residents with greater access to High Court proceedings within the Union Territory itself.
Why the Decision Matters
Ladakh's mountainous terrain and long distances between settlements can make access to public institutions difficult. Residents requiring High Court services may face additional travel, time and financial costs when proceedings require them to travel outside the region.
The establishment of a local High Court bench is expected to reduce some of these difficulties by bringing higher judicial services closer to the population.

Amit Shah said the decision reflects the government's commitment to the development of Ladakh and to ensuring constitutional safeguards for its residents.
The Home Ministry plays an important role in matters concerning Union Territories, while the Cabinet's approval provides the policy basis for establishing the new judicial facility.
What Will Change for Residents?
The key change will be the availability of a High Court bench within Ladakh. Residents will have a more accessible location for matters assigned to the bench, potentially reducing the need for long-distance travel for judicial proceedings.
However, the judicial structure itself will remain unchanged in one important respect: Ladakh will continue to be part of the jurisdiction of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh rather than having an independent High Court.
The move is therefore aimed at bringing the existing High Court closer to the people of Ladakh and strengthening access to justice across the Union Territory.
