Iran Near Agreement with Oman on Temporary Shipping Route, But Rules Out Full Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi clarifies that establishing a technical maritime corridor does not equal an unconditional opening of the vital oil transit route.

TEHRAN — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that indirect negotiations mediated by Oman are nearing completion on establishing a designated "temporary shipping route" through the Strait of Hormuz. However, Araghchi cautioned against treating technical navigation arrangements as a full restoration of normal commercial maritime transit through the waterway.

Addressing reporters following cabinet consultations, Araghchi emphasized that broader maritime reopening remains contingent on the United States addressing outstanding diplomatic and security grievances.

"The negotiations are ongoing, and given the technical complexities, a temporary route is currently being worked out. In my view, we are very close to reaching a final agreement. However, this step should not be interpreted as a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is contingent on other conditions, including the United States making amends for its violation of the understanding."
