INDEPENDENCE DAY 2026: PM NARENDRA MODI PAYS FLORAL TRIBUTES TO MAHATMA GANDHI AT RAJGHAT

The Prime Minister honored the Father of the Nation ahead of leading India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations from the historic Red Fort.

NEW DELHI: On the morning of India’s 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

Dressed in traditional attire, the Prime Minister walked down the stone path leading to the black marble memorial platform (samadhi). Standing before the eternal flame, PM Modi offered fresh flower petals to commemorate the enduring legacy of the Father of the Nation. He stood in silent reflection while devotional hymns played in the background, marking a solemn start to the national day of celebration.

The annual visit to Rajghat serves as an essential tradition before the grand ceremonial address at the Red Fort. Honoring Mahatma Gandhi underscores the core foundational values of truth, non-violence, and self-reliance (Swaraj).

In a message to the nation, PM Modi remembered the sacrifices of India's freedom fighters, noting that their courage continues to inspire 140 crore citizens toward building a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).

Following his tribute at Rajghat, Prime Minister Modi proceeded to the Red Fort. Upon arrival, he was received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and military dignitaries to inspect the Guard of Honour before hoisting the Tricolour from the ramparts.

This year's 80th Independence Day celebrations hold special significance, highlighting the theme of 'Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat' alongside nationwide commemorations marking 150 years of the National Song, Vande Mataram.
