India’s largest private-sector lender is considering an internal succession option alongside an outsider as it prepares for a leadership change later this year.
New Delhi: HDFC Bank is evaluating potential candidates for its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer as the tenure of current CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan approaches its end, according to people familiar with the matter.
Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha is understood to be among the candidates being considered for the top position. At the same time, the bank is also looking at the possibility of appointing a candidate from outside the organisation, according to a report by Reuters.
The discussions are part of the bank’s succession planning and do not amount to a final decision. HDFC Bank has not officially announced Bharucha as its next CEO.
Bharucha emerges as internal option
Bharucha has held senior positions at HDFC Bank and is currently its Deputy Managing Director. His experience across the bank’s businesses makes him a potential internal successor as the lender prepares for a change at the top.
Choosing an internal candidate could provide continuity in the bank’s strategy and operations. However, the possibility of an external appointment indicates that the bank is keeping its options open during the selection process.
Jagdishan's tenure nearing its end
Sashidhar Jagdishan became HDFC Bank’s Managing Director and CEO following the merger of HDFC Ltd with HDFC Bank. His current term is scheduled to end in October 2026.
The bank has indicated that it is moving ahead with the process of identifying his successor. The final appointment will also require regulatory approval from the Reserve Bank of India.
No final decision yet
Despite Bharucha being considered, there is currently no official confirmation that he will take over as CEO. The bank is reportedly evaluating more than one option before reaching a final decision.
The succession process will be closely watched by investors because HDFC Bank is one of India’s largest financial institutions. The identity of the next CEO could influence the bank’s future strategy, growth priorities and approach to addressing challenges in its business.
For now, Kaizad Bharucha remains a potential candidate rather than the officially designated successor. The final decision is expected to emerge through the bank’s formal succession and regulatory approval process.
