Israel
and Greece signed a 3 billion euro ($3.48 billion) defence agreement on Monday
under which Israel will build a multi-layered defence system for Greece,
Israel’s Defence Ministry said, marking a major expansion of security

The agreement is centred on the development of an
integrated defence network designed to strengthen Greece’s ability to respond
to a range of aerial threats. Israel’s Defence Ministry spokesperson announced
the deal, while a supplementary agreement worth 26 million euros will provide
Greece with Israeli-made Drone Dome systems.
The main agreement is part of Greece’s broader effort
to modernise its armed forces and strengthen its air and missile defence
capabilities. Athens has been working towards the creation of a multi-layered
system capable of addressing different types of threats, including aircraft,

The planned network is known as the “Achilles Shield”
and has been under development as Greece seeks to build a more comprehensive
air-defence architecture. Earlier this year, Greece approved a purchase of a
multi-layered air-defence system from Israel worth around 3 billion euros.
The system is expected to combine different types of
Israeli radar and missile technology to provide protection at multiple ranges.
Israeli defence companies Rafael and Israel Aerospace Industries have been
involved in the broader Greek air-defence programme, with their technologies
forming the core of the planned system.
The additional 26 million euro agreement for Drone
Dome systems adds another layer to Greece’s efforts to counter the growing
threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles. Drone warfare has become an
increasingly important element of modern military operations, with inexpensive
drones capable of being used for surveillance, targeting and attacks.
