MODI vs CHIDAMBARAM: THE 'DIMAGI NAXAL' REMARK THAT IGNITED A NEW POLITICAL ROW

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day warning against ideological Maoists draws a sharp retort from former Home Minister P. Chidambaram, turning Red Fort rhetoric into an intense national debate on dissent and policy influence.

NEW DELHI: Addressing the nation from the historic ramparts of the Red Fort on India’s 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that while armed Naxalism in the forests is breathing its last, an ideological threat persists: “dimagi Naxals”. The Prime Minister alleged that individuals holding a Maoist mindset had historically entrenched themselves in the corridors of power and government committees, influencing public policy and waiting for opportunities to incite unrest, urging citizens to identify and isolate such elements to safeguard national progress toward Viksit Bharat 2047. The rhetoric triggered a swift, sarcastic retaliation from senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who posted on social media that he is proud to be a “dimagi Naxal,” escalating the exchange across party lines as Union Minister Kiren Rijiju countered that the remarks targeted those backing separatists or rejecting the Constitution, while Opposition figures argued the term is an attempt to stigmatize constitutional critique and weaponize national security language against political critics. Ultimately, this latest ideological clash underlines a growing rift in Indian political discourse, leaving the national conversation divided over whether such framing serves as an imperative security warning or a political tool to polarize public debate.
