Oil Slick From Wrecked Tanker Caroline Bezengi Expands Off Oman Coast

Spill stretches roughly 390 km near the Hallaniyat Islands as teams work to contain the leak

Location: Dhofar, Oman

By: Middle East Bureau

An oil slick from the wrecked tanker Caroline Bezengi has expanded to roughly 390 kilometres off the Hallaniyat Islands near Oman’s Dhofar Governorate, according to Omani authorities.

The Cameroon-flagged Suezmax tanker was carrying Russian crude oil loaded at Novorossiysk and was bound for India when it was wrecked. The vessel has been widely linked to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet and has been sanctioned by the United Kingdom and European Union.

Omani authorities said the oil slick is moving northeast and has come to within approximately 7 kilometres of the mainland shoreline at its closest point, raising concerns over potential environmental impacts along the coast.

Omani response teams are monitoring the situation and assessing the condition of the tanker’s hull. Authorities are also working to contain the leaking oil and are preparing for the eventual removal of remaining cargo from the damaged vessel.

The incident is being closely monitored because of the tanker’s cargo, its proximity to Oman’s coastline and the potential risks to marine ecosystems and coastal communities in the Dhofar region.

Authorities continue to assess the movement of the slick and the condition of the wreck as containment efforts progress.
