Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Will Remain Closed Until US Changes Its Policy

Mohsen Rezai says Tehran will keep the strategic waterway closed until Washington changes its behaviour and accepts Iran’s conditions

Location: Tehran, Iran

By: Middle East Bureau

Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezai, has said that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States changes its behaviour and accepts conditions set by Tehran.

Rezai’s remarks signal a continued hardline position from Tehran over the strategically important waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a major route for global energy shipments.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with the status of the Strait of Hormuz emerging as a major concern for regional security and international energy markets.

Iran has previously warned that developments involving the country’s security and relations with Washington could affect navigation through the strategic waterway.

Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the Strait could have wider implications for global oil and gas supplies, given the volume of energy exports that traditionally passes through the route.

The latest statement from Rezai indicates that Tehran is linking the reopening of the waterway to changes in US policy and the acceptance of Iran’s stated conditions.
